The factory was run by a German chemist named Johann Friedrich Böttger, who had previously discovered the secret of making hard-paste porcelain at Meissen in Germany. He also obtained a railway line to Belleek, to transport the raw materials and the finished products.

The Belleek factory began producing porcelain in 1857, using the kaolin clay from Limoges and the local feldspar. The factory produced a distinctive type of porcelain, known as Parian ware, which was characterized by its thinness, slightly iridescent surface, and body formulated with a significant proportion of frit. The factory also produced a unique type of porcelain, known as Belleek Black, which was made from a mixture of clay, manganese, and cobalt. The factory also developed its own styles and motifs, such as the shamrock, the basketweave, and the shell.
